Researchers — Financial Aids

Financial aids will be granted within the limits of available funds.

Invitation of a speaker

Québec-Océan may contribute to the travel and accommodation expenses of a speaker invited by a co-researcher or collaborator from Quebec. The amount granted will vary according to the guest's origin and other sources of funding (Institution, Department, Group or Network, Researcher).  

The conference must:

  • involve at least 2 co-researcher members
  • be related to the scientific program of Québec-Océan

Workshop

Québec-Océan may provide customized financial assistance to co-researcher members who wish to organize a workshop to bring together scientists and/or stakeholders. The amount granted will depend on the priorities of the request for the group and the financial capacities of the moment.

The workshop must:

  • bring together at least 2 co-researcher members from different institutions 
  • be part of the cluster's scientific program
  • ensure the visibility of Québec-Océan in the workshop announcements and during the activity.

Collaborative Project

Québec-Océan can provide support to members who wish to undertake a collaborative project. In-kind and/or cash support will depend on the categories of the applicant members (see table below) and the decision of the evaluation committee:

Maximum $5 000 in cash support to co-researchers

 

In-kind support can be provided in several ways:

  • Time of the person in charge and operators of the oceanographic equipment, captain of small boat
  • Time of the person in charge of the physico-chemical data processing
  • Travel and accommodation of these employees
  • Financial support to students: bonuses for publications, support for conferences and short courses.

Cash support may be provided to members for:

  • Salary of the personnel assigned to the project
  • Travel and accommodation.

 

Conditions for support

  • Be part of the scientific program of Québec-Océan
  • Be led by a co-researcher, a government collaborator or an Ally.
  • Bring together at least two co-researchers, from different institutions as much as possible
  • Ensure the visibility of Québec-Océan, during the project activities and in the deliverables, particularly in the acknowledgements of subsequent publications.

Prior to the activity, the applicant must provide the principal coordination with a document of no more than two pages including:

  • Names and affiliations of co-applicants
  • Title of the project
  • Dates and location
  • Total budget, including sources of revenue and amounts requested from Québec-Océan in kind and in cash
  • Details of in-kind (time and type of assistance) and cash contributions
  • Project summary
  • Relevance and benefits of the project
  • The reason why Quebec Ocean's support is needed.


Evaluation of applications

Applications may be submitted at any time. An evaluation committee will evaluate them twice a year, in mid-March and mid-September. The committee will be composed of the scientific director, the axis leaders and the theme leaders concerned. The evaluation criteria and their weightings will be as follows:

The amounts awarded are at the Committee's discretion, within the amounts stated above and the funds available to Québec-Océan.

Rental of a field vehicle

Québec-Océan may provide tailored financial support to co-researchers who need to rent a vehicle for a collaborative project outside their university home town. The amount awarded will depend on the interest of the project for the cluster and the financial capabilities at the time.

The mission must :

  • involve at least 2 co-researcher members 
  • be part of the group's scientific program
  • ensure the visibility of Québec-Océan during the activity and/or in the project's communications.

Submit the "Vehicle Rental Form" at least one month before the activity

Purchase of field equipment

Québec-Océan may purchase field equipment on an occasional basis, if it is shown that this equipment can serve a significant portion of the Group for several years. The equipment will be part of the Oceanographic Equipment Pool of the Group. The amount awarded will depend on the value of the equipment to the cluster and the financial capabilities at the time.

The equipment must: 

  • interest at least 3 co-researcher members
  • be related to the scientific program of Québec-Océan.
