Interactive Sound Atlas of the St. Lawrence

The interactive atlas of the soundscapes of St. Lawrence, created by Yvan Simard's team (DFO), makes it possible to visualize the sounds generated by marine traffic - and the impact on the various species that reside there. The data was collected using hydrophones - underwater microphones - deployed to record all sounds: human navigation, marine mammals, and other organisms, but also the sound of waves and earthquakes.  The application, which took several months to develop, was designed by the Meridian (Marine Environmental Research Infrastructure for Data Integration and Application Network) team of oceanographers and computer scientists from ISMER-UQAR, the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, Dalhousie University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University.
