Forest fires in Siberia could increase marine biomass

Forest fires in Siberia could increase marine biomass. As forest fires multiply in the Northern Hemisphere's boreal forest and tundra, Mathieu Ardyna, a CNRS researcher at U. Laval (Unité mixte Internationale Takuvik), and his colleagues studied the transport and impact of aerosols emitted by Siberian forest fires. During the summer of 2014, they detected larger-than-normal phytoplankton blooms near the North Pole. This would be due to the large quantities of nitrogen transported by aerosols and concentrated in the surface waters of the Laptev Sea, which fed the phytoplankton and encouraged its growth.
